Established in 1957, the Manuscript Collection comprises several specialized sections.
The most prominent of these is the collection of university history documents, which aims to preserve materials related to the history and operation of the university. This section houses professorial estates (personal papers), a commemorative library representing the university’s academic research, theses, dissertations, a photograph collection, and historical artifacts. Among others, our Manuscript Department holds the estates and personal papers of István Rugonfalvi Kiss (Professor of History), László Országh (Professor of the Department of English), János Hankiss (Professor of Romance Studies), Bálint Csűry (Linguist), Géza Juhász (Literary Scholar), Rezső Milleker and László Kádár (Geographers), and Lajos Balla (Historian of Antiquity).
Records and other documents of the Debrecen Summer School have been continuously transferred to the management of the Manuscript Department since its foundation in 1927. The institutional archives of the University Library form a distinct unit, containing official documents generated between 1915 and 1995. The manuscript collection proper consists partly of nationalized handwritten volumes from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and partly of contemporary manuscripts related to the region.
In addition, the theater history section includes 19th-century handwritten promptbooks and cue sheets originating from the library of the permanent theater of Debrecen, scores for operas, operettas, and other musical performances, as well as a nearly complete series of printed playbills.
The Manuscript Department also houses the ex libris collection of István Nyíreő, which comprises several thousand pieces and boasts outstanding works of 20th-century small graphic arts.

The collection is located in the Kassai Road Campus Library and is searchable in the catalog. Documents are available for on-site use only, during the opening hours of the Manuscript Department.
